When we see this kind of lamp today, it is just a form of decoration. The hurricane candle lamp was however the more common lighting fixture during the Colonial times. Back then, it was either an oil or candle lamp. It had a kind of globe cover that prevented the flame from being blown out by the wind. It usually had a handle because back in the day homes did not have a lot of this fixture. Hurricane lamps were carried from room to room wherever it was needed.
Today the hurricane lamp is treasured as an antique piece. Many try to get them in their genuine form. Original hurricane lamps were made from tin, steel, brass or bronze. They are also available, to a lesser extent, made of ceramic or glass. For safety reasons, they are now fitted with electric lights but they retain their original external appearance.
